What is Chiropractic and what does a Chiropractor do?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that specialises in the diagnosis and management of conditions involving the muscles, bones, joints and nerves of the body. Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, they can also help with a wide range of other musculoskeletal conditions. A chiropractor uses a range of hands-on techniques in order to help you reach your goal.

What does treatment from a Chiropractor involve?

Chiropractic is not a specific treatment, but a profession. At The Hanham Clinic, we use a number of different techniques and approaches to help our patients meet their goal, whether that is to treat an injury, reduce pain or just simply improve your overall health.

Although chiropractors are best known for their use of manipulation (where they use their hands to make gentle, specific adjustments to improve the function of the skeleton), the chiropractors at our clinic utilise a range of techniques that may include:

  • A variety of soft tissue techniques
  • Joint mobilisation techniques
  • Posture and ergonomic advice
  • Supportive taping (such as kinesio-taping)
  • Dry needling (that is also known as medical acupuncture)
  • Tailored rehabilitation and exercises specific to your case
  • General advice, information and education regarding your issue

What conditions might a Chiropractor be able to help with?

✅ General, acute & chronic backache and back pain ✅ Sciatica (nerve pain going down your leg) ✅ Headaches arising from the neck (“cervicogenic” headaches) ✅ Mechanical neck pain ✅ Migraine prevention ✅ Disorders and injuries of the rotator cuff, and soft tissue disorders of the shoulder ✅ Ankle sprains ✅ Muscle cramp ✅ Elbow pain and tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck ✅ Joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis (in conjunction with exercise) ✅ Generalised aches and pains ✅ Lumbago ✅ Minor sports injuries ✅ Muscle spasms ✅ Plantar fasciitis

(Please note this is a broad list of conditions that we may be able to help with, however is dependant on your individual case)

Our approach to Chiropractic and how our Chiropractors could help you…

At The Hanham Clinic we pride ourselves on treating the underlying cause of the problem and not just the symptoms. We offer individual lifestyle advice regarding exercise, work and diet in order to support a programme of treatment and reduce the risk of a condition returning. Rehabilitation can play an important part in this. For many long-standing conditions there is not a simple cure but through a variety of different methods our chiropractors support patients to be able to self-manage their problems. Above all, we understand that most people consult us for pain relief, and it is always our initial aim to resolve those painful symptoms.

Do I need a referral to book with a Chiropractor?

Although many people visit us following the recommendation from another healthcare practitioner, you do not need a referral and can in fact self-refer to see one of our Chiropractors. You can book an appointment by visiting our booking page.

Once you have booked an appointment with us, you will receive a confirmation email containing all the details about the appointment. Within this email is a link to an online medical questionnaire, that we ask you complete prior to your appointment with us. Once you have completed this form it will immediately become visible to us prior to your visit.

How long does it take to get an appointment with a Chiropractor?

We are usually able to provide an appointment with a Chiropractor within 48 hours, depending on our availability. If you require an evening appointment this can sometimes mean waiting a little longer. You can view our Chiropractic availability by visiting our booking page and selecting either an "Initial Consultation" or "Follow up appointment" from the drop down menu, based on whether you are a new or existing patient at the clinic.

Can I choose the Chiropractor that I see for my Chiropractor for my Initial Consultation and Treatment?

At The Hanham Clinic we have a range of practitioners available and you can read more about our team members on our meet the team page.

If you have a preference, you can select a specific practitioner through our online booking page- and if you call us to book an appointment, you can request to see a certain individual, although sometimes this may involve waiting a little longer.

All our Chiropractors are fully qualified to a Masters Degree level and are registered with the General Chiropractic Council, a legal requirement in the UK.
