Massage and Sports Massage Services at The Hanham Clinic

Here at The Hanham Clinic, we offer a range of different types of massage, including sports massage (that is often referred to as deep tissue massage), or remedial massage that can help with general stress reduction and relaxation, and for those during their 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy.

As well as having a massage/sports massage qualification, our massage therapists are also trained in a number of different techniques that can be used to tailor the treatment to your needs, in order to help with specific conditions.

Additional techniques that our massage therapists are trained in:

  1. Trigger point therapy
  2. Post-Isometic Relaxation (PIR) stretching
  3. General stretching and mobilisation of joints
  4. Supportive taping
  5. Instrument-assisted myofascial release (IASTM)
  6. Various myofascial release techniques

Who will provide my massage?

Your massage sessions will be provided by one of our highly trained therapists, who each have developed a slightly different skillset and background. It is important to recognise that your session will be tailored toward your needs and preferences, which will be discussed with you at your initial consultation with us. Before you book your appointment you can choose a practitioner and if you are unsure of who would best be suited to help you then you can always discuss this with us first over the phone. We have two practitioners available, Tanya Chowdhury and Tommy Jermyn, who you are able to chose from when booking your appointment through our website.

What should I expect at my massage consultation?

During your initial consultation with us, your massage therapist/sports therapist will take a case history, which involves a discussion about your reason for visiting us, your background medical history and preferences regarding massage. During this part of your appointment, you may wish to highlight your particular areas of discomfort or concern, which will be taken into account and addressed during your treatment session. Normally, a brief examination will take place in order to help your practitioner identify the main areas of concern- and then any proposed treatment is discussed with you. After this, with your consent, your first treatment will also take place where we begin to get you feeling better again!

What are the benefits to massage?

There are a number of known benefits to receiving massage therapy, both physical and mental. Patients often report the following after a massage session:

  1. Relaxation of tight muscles

  2. Improved mood and sense of relaxation (plus reduction in stress)

  3. Improvements in flexibility

  4. Reduced tension and discomfort

  5. Improved recovery after sporting events

Can chiropractic and massage be combined?

Many of our patients use a combination of chiropractic and massage therapy, both of which we provide at our clinic in Bristol. The benefits of massage therapy can be extremely powerful and when combined with chiropractic care, patients can feel additional benefits. You can also consult our massage therapists without a referral from a chiropractor or GP.

Does massage feel uncomfortable?

It is important to recognise that your massage therapist will always tailor your treatment to your needs, but most importantly to your pain tolerance. Often massage is relaxing and pleasant, but more firm sports massage or deep tissue massage may be uncomfortable at times, particularly if your muscles are sore prior to your treatment. Some people enjoy firmer pressure, but your preference is of utmost importance!
